Here is a short video (by bjnesbittsummarizing some of the most important characteristics of many students today – how they learn, what they need to learn, their goals, hopes, dreams, what their lives will be like; and how they view their current school experience.

The video features one primary child who reads a book 2 hours a week and another who listens for 5 hours to the latest Harry Potter on his iPod. I am certain that this reflects the experience of many young people in Scotland as well as in the US where this film was made.

We may mourn the passing of the era when kids curled up on a wet Saturday afternoon with a great read (if that is anything more than a nostalgic reference to one’s own childhood); but I believe the clip accurately represents the dissonance between life outside and inside school. And we as educators need to recognise this and teach the kids to think, evaluate, reflect, analyse.
