Shaving foam

Practising spelling words can be a real challenge for many children at the early stages of acquiring literacy. I have found tins of shaving foam a very useful motivator as an alternative to salt, sand or plastic letters.

The child can write letters or whole words into the foam sprayed on to a baking sheet. S/he says a word, and sounds it out (if it is phonically regular) or names the letters if not. The child uses a ‘pointing finger’ to write the letter or word into the foam.

This appeals to all little ones and is useful for kineasthetic learners in particular.
